Stop At: Seward Highway, AK

The drive from Anchorage to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center/Portage Glacier Area begins with spectacular views as you pass between the dramatic shorelines of Turnagain Arm and the jutting peaks of the Chugach Mountains. The Seward Highway is considered to be one of the most scenic highways in the US.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Mile 79 Seward Highway, Girdwood, Anchorage, AK 99587

At the 200-acre Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, jaws drop in awe-even those of longtime Alaskans who've studied grizzlies and other animals up close. AWCC's mission is to preserve Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education and quality animal care. The center, which opened to the public in 1993, also educates visitors about Alaska's wildlife. Coyotes peer out from behind the brush while a bald eagle swoops in on the salmon remains left by a grizzly bear. Wood Bison plod through 65 acres of tidal flat terrain, as part of a program that will one day restore the species to the Alaskan wilderness. Animals that cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. Come be a part of these exciting programs and watch these animals display their natural, “wild”, behavior.

You will have about 90 minutes here to view these animals. There is coffee and food for purchase from vendors at the Center.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

  • THIS was an amazing tour . We enjoyed it immensely!!! Albert was a fantastic guide...very informative!!! Highly recommend will NOT be disappinted!!

  • Our Tour Director, Julie, was excellent - informative and humorous. She did a great job giving us information along the way. Because of the smoke around Anchorage, she took it upon herself to substitute one stop for another to a scenic hike and waterfall, which was well worth it.

  • This was a great trip with an informative host, Scott. I really enjoyed the Portage Glacier boat ride and visiting the Animal Conservancy and seeing all the wild animals! Treat yourself to this tour.

  • A wonderful tour by Planet Earth Adventures! We started with a tour of Portage Glacier, which was a wonderful way to start our Alaskan vacation. We even saw caving ice! We stopped by a salmon run and saw dozens of them. Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge was wonderful and the animals most of them had plenty of room to wander. We had some time left at the end of the tour, so our guide took us to a mountain top overlooking the city. We highly recommend this tour!

  • Highly enjoyable tour that covered all of the things I was hoping to see during the trip. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get out of the city for a day.

  • So much fun! Will and Lisa were very professional and made the day fun and exciting. They made sure to clearly instruct us before starting and they both connected with everyone personally and individually throughout the zip line experience. We were very fortunate to have beautiful weather and had a blast! Thank you!

  • This was an amazing tour and a great way to see a glimpse of what the Anchorage area has to offer. Albert was an awesome tour guide who shared lots of great stories and information along the way. A great experience in every way!
