  • Jeff was enthusiastic, personable and knowledgeable. What an amazing experience! It was as if we were in the heavens… above the clouds witnessing the magic of nature with a glowing sunset and the emergence of the starry sky. We all affirmed seeing the largest brightest shooting star of our lives. Truly magical.

  • Awesome experience, the sunset was beautiful but the star gazing was majestic!!!!! Highly recommend!

  • Sunset, moon rise, and star gazing. Jason is a wealth of knowledge snd gave us a truly great experience.

  • My favorite part of my time in the Big Island. Not only do you get to see sunset from above the clouds, but the stars are incredible! Jason was an amazing guide and I loved the intimate group size, dinner, and snacks provided. An unforgettable experience.

  • This trip had two of the most memorable moments of my life with the mountain top sunset and the evening stargazing. The drive up Mauna Kea was breathtaking and the views from the top were once in a lifetime. We followed that up with an hour of star gazing in pitch black conditions. More stars than my brain could comprehend. I was in awe. Jason our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and very patient with our group. A true gentleman. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kona.

  • It was definitely a site to see. Jason was an amazing tour guide. Bring a hoodie or jacket it gets COLD up there. Also bring some snacks you will get a little hungry the dinner provided is not exactly enough to get u through the tour. Some small snacks are recommended. A bit pricey but worth the site..

  • We had a party of six. From the moment we met Jason at the pickup point, we knew we were in well-qualified hands. His knowledge of the history, geography, geology and the constellations of Hawaii and the Hawaiian sky...and beyond... deepened the experience and made our excursion one of the richest adventures we have ever had. Worth every Penny!! Wish we had more time to go on more encounters with this company and Jason, in particular. Thank you all for providing an excellent, professional and life changing experience. We will recommend you to any of our friends and family who head to the islands.

  • I was looking forward to this tour that this company worked with me in rescheduling it due to the weather. Great service in providing weather gear to withstand the extreme cold at the summit. The guide was well knowledgeable about the island, Hawaiian culture and language, and especially the stars. I would do this tour again.

  • This was a very exciting adventure. A must to put on you bucket list. The guide was very knowledgeable.

  • Star gazing! Sunset! Mauna Kea! Everything was great. Justin did a fantastic job! He was very knowledgeable.

  • The best tour we ever had! Out tourist guide, Jeff, was amazing and know a lot about Hawaii and the stars. The summit is different than anything we’ve ever seen, feels like you are in another planet. Don’t forget to bring a goooood jacket

  • Definitely recommend this trip!

We started the trip w our guide Jeff around 2:15pm and got back around 11pm. On the drive up Jeff explains a lot about the lava, volcanos and over all history of the island. Once we got to the summit, we saw the most gorgeous sunset standing above the clouds on top of the biggest volcano in the world. The giant observatories were opening up and moving which was cool to see. Being above the clouds and seeing the sunset was a first for us. It’s a must! You can do this only in a few places in the world. After the sun set, we looked through the telescope and saw stars, constellations and the moon. It was a bright night so unfortunately couldn’t see much of the Milky Way.

Dinner was surprisingly very good and hot (in temperature), which we had before getting to the summit. The parkas, that were provided, kept us warm. It was definitely below freezing so prepare accordingly. Definitely a fun and unique experience!

  • The sunset was amazing. Justin was our tour guide. He was very informative. The whole ride up the views were breathtaking.

  • Heraldo was an excellent guide with tons of interesting geologic and historical facts. The summit sinset was spectacular.

  • An amazing star gazing experience! The tour guide Martell is super knowledgeable and helpful. He showed us many constellations, galaxies, nebulas and stars. Thanks, Martell!

  • What a treat to see the moon rise from the clouds atop the sunset hillside! Then to see the planet's through the telescope and catch a glimpse of the international space station fly over us! All with my parka and hot cocoa! Mattiio was a great guide.

  • An amazing experience. Huge thanks to Tour Guide Jeff at Hawaii Forest and Trails for making this a wonderful experience.

  • Mauna Kea summit was close due to protesters. Weather did not cooperate. But guides did everything possible to make this tour on western slopes of Mauna Kea as interesting as possible. And they succeeded. We have seen number of interesting birds including pallila and good telescopic observations of the sky that had opened only in the last moment. So all in all it was interesting tour.

  • Really great trip, very well organised. Our tour guide was very informative and friendly, the sunset from the mountain top is unforgettable and the stars are amazing. Food is good, hot chocolate and brownies excellent.

  • Mat was great, had a great time and he was very knowledgeable when it came to picking out the stars and constellations.

  • What can I say but WOW ... it was a fantastic. Our guide, Justin, was awesome ... he was very considerate of all the guest with any questions or concerns anyone had and very knowledgeable. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in seeing the night sky. The sunset was a once in a lifetime adventure.

  • Justin was our guide, he was awesome! You wont go wrong taking this tour. One bit of advice it gets cold wear socks!!

  • This tour was my favorite on the Big Island! Sunset at the top of Mauna Kea was amazing and I enjoyed learning about the constellations. Justin was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to accommodate everyone in the group. Highly recommend this tour!

  • Fantastic views from the top... Great guide super friendly and shared a wealth of knowledge! Dinner was good and the hot chocolate and brownies topped off the star gazing! Would definitely recommend this tour. The parkas provided kept us warm, but recommend bringing some gloves...
